It’s sure been a while since I posted. Life has been full and I’ve traveled to the Carolinas and to New England for Thanksgiving and Christmas respectively. I’ve been hanging with some kewl new people and enjoying life here in Las Vegas as best I can.
On to the reason for this post: a story I wrote was posted to the front page of kuro5hin.org. Pronounced “corrosion”, it’s a site where users write stories and articles and then the members vote stuff up or down.
What may not be apparent unless you’re familiar with kuro5hin is that it’s largely a haven of vile misanthropes who despise almost everything. I’ve been occasionally reading and commenting there for years as the community has shrunk down to only the most stalwart and bitter members. I take it as a great honor that my story was accepted and voted up by such people.
I suppose it’s not too surprising — it’s a dark story. But I’m proud of it. Hope I can get myself to do more writing in the future.
Hey D… yeah, I sort of considered doing that, but then dropped the ball. Largely because I don’t know where to start in that direction and I’m not sure what the barriers to entry are, or how likely it would be published. I know you’re a bit more a regular writer than I. What do you suggest (if anything)?
I suggest researching a few markets/mags/sites to see what might be a good fit, then follow the submission guidelines & hope the zine agrees your story is a good fit. Repeat.

A lot of the online markets tend to cease publication, but the site will linger so it’s always best to check the dates. Make sure the place you’re interested in is currently publishing and that you’re okay with the rights you’re assigning them if they accept your story. Also, some print publications will purchase stories that have appeared online and vice versa. Others won’t.
I’ll look up a few places as suggestions to get you started. No harm in trying, right?

Some Ideas
Okay, following are some examples/ideas of possible places to try. (some are pay, some are not)
Something to keep in mind as you research. If a market says “no unsolicited manuscript,” you can still submit to them. Just send a query letter first. They’ll either request to read your manuscript (making it “solicited” vs. “unsolicited”) or not.

Hey, thanks for all the ideas! I will definitely explore those soon. Right now I’ve got myself committed to recording an album by July 4th. So far so good, though it’ll be a photo finish
How often have you done that novel-in-november thing? Ever completed it?

I remember you’d posted before about pursuing your music! Very cool.
2008 was my fourth year trying nanowrimo and my first year actually finishing.
I’m still editing/revising the novel. I have other things I want to start writing (and finish writing – lol), but I’m trying to be good & get the novel in an acceptable form first; it needs some work still.
